LS Art (LS)
The Lower School art program nurtures individual visual expression, builds skills using a variety of art tools and materials, and develops an understanding of the principles of design. Students broaden their artistic personalities by learning about art from many cultures. Art projects challenge students to use their hands, hearts, eyes, and minds and to “let their imaginations soar”. Lower School art classes meet twice a week for all three years of Lower School.
Art 4
The 4th-Grade program encourages the youngest NCS artists to explore and respond to art materials and begin to reflect on their process. Students investigate new concepts and develop coordination of their hands and minds to bring their ideas to life in their artwork. Art projects focus on exploration and play with materials and concepts, the 4th Grade class animal, and culture. 4th Graders attend two 55-minute art classes per rotation.

Art 5
5th-Grade projects are structured to build on concepts and skills learned in earlier years to promote stronger observational skills; more thoughtful responses to subject matter, experiences, and ideas; and better organization skills and manipulation of tools. Growing art abilities and expanding knowledge enable 5th Graders to pursue more complex processes to express their artistic creativity, imagination, and expression.

Art 6
The 6th-Grade art program provides an opportunity for young artists to express their beliefs and share their experiences through art. While building on previously developed artistic knowledge and vocabulary, 6th-Grade artists continue to enhance their observational skills as well drawing and painting techniques. Projects provide artists with opportunities to select more personally meaningful images and symbols to create their visual expressions. Interdisciplinary art projects and discussions about art reflect artists’ rising awareness of the connections among art, art history, themselves as artists, and their communities. 6th Grade students attend art class two times per rotation for fifty or fifty-five minutes.
