NCS's theater program introduces our Middle and Upper School students to the stage as they engage in individual and collaborative expression. Our faculty members seek to broaden each student's perspective through the exploration of characters and of concepts, challenging their preconceptions and inspiring their empathy.

Our introductory, intermediate, and advanced classes provide our students with the opportunity to see firsthand the various aspects of theater and to pursue their respective interests in acting, production work, and/or design.

The NCS Theater Department also has an extensive co-curricular production program, in coordination with St. Albans School (STA) for boys, culminating each year in two Middle School and three Upper School shows, including classics, modern plays, and musicals.

Our Middle and Upper School students hold their performances at Trapier Theater, located at STA, just on the other side of the Cathedral. Trapier is a sizable theater, accommodating more than 300 audience members, that gives our teachers the opportunity to work with actors on projecting their voices in a natural-sounding way.

For our lighting, tech, stage, and costume design programs, our students can go behind the scenes, learning new technical and creative skills while also advancing the development of the show and connecting closely with their peers, sharing in a fun and dynamic group experience. Because of our coordinate program with STA, we are able to offer great resources for this type of technical, theatrical work.

Recently, we went behind the scenes of the Middle School theater production of A Wrinkle in Time, a story about three children who set off on a time-traveling, intergalactic adventure. Creating this complex and vibrant play involved learning lines and practicing logistics, setting up lighting and tech, adding props and sound cues, designing costumes and stage makeup, and much more.
