Varsity Field Hockey Shuts Out Madeira, 4-0

The NCS Varsity Field Hockey turned in a strong effort at Madeira on October 27, outshooting the Snails by a wide margin and coming away with a 4 - 0 victory despite a standout performance in goal by the Madeira goalkeeper.  NCS dominated the field position game from the outset, with the forward line (Selin Everett ‘17, Claire McGinnis ‘17, Margaret Dent ‘16) and the midfield (Meghan McGovern ‘17, co-Captain Rosie Delk ‘16, and Natalie Belt ‘16) bottling up the ball inside the Madeira 25-yard line and generating numerous shots and penalty corners.  NCS looked like it would get on the board early, but the Madeira goalie made a diving save across the crease.  At the 15:33 mark, however, NCS broke through for the first of three goals in a 7-minute span.  Belt made a beautiful dodge and carried into the circle, then laid a pass off the left post that Everett slammed home for the 1-0 lead.  Five minutes later, McGinnis put a hard shot on the Madeira goalie’s pads and although the goalie made the kick save, Dent corralled the rebound and flicked it inside the right post.  Minutes later, Everett and McGinnis combined for the third goal when Everett made a baseline run and sent a crossing pass in front where McGinnis knocked it in to give the Eagles the 3 - 0 lead.  In the second half, Madeira began to pressure more, but NCS defenders Katie Graham ‘16, Gigi Grigorian ‘17, and Zoe Lindahl ‘16 helped hold the Snails to just one shot on goal.  In the midfield, Madison DiLenge ‘16, Serena Irwin ‘17, and Domi Turner ‘16 were able to gain possession between the 25 yard lines, and forwards Caitlin McNamara ‘17, Elizabeth Thoren ‘17, and Siobhan Robinson-Marshall ‘16 began to draw penalty corners and generate shots.  With eight minutes to play in the game, Robinson-Marshall took a pass from Irwin, dodged several Madeira defenders, and shot the ball past the Madeira goalie headed for the left post, where a charging Thoren hit it home.  With the win, NCS brings its ISL record to 7-2-1 (10-4-1 overall) with one game remaining.
