The Ethics Bowl differs traditional debate competitions in that it requires teams to engage in a discussion with each other, identifying moral dimensions of current issues and consideration of different viewpoints. Lauryn Barnes '17, Paige Buckley '17, Emma Greenfield '16, Mary Pelson '17, Ly-Lan Schaszberger '16, and Meredith Sherman '16 made up the squad of "Ethical Eagles," and they got coaching from volunteer Baj Bajodah, a philosophy student at American University.
This was the first time NCS participated in the event, so the team took a crash course in philosophical ethics and applied these theories to current issues in areas such as medicine, law, politics, education, athletics, business, and environmental policy.
Even after three hours of matches at American University, the students were eager for more conversation, bringing their characteristic passion and thoughtfulness to challenging topics. Congratulations, Ethical Eagles, on an excellent first foray into the Ethics Bowl!
