MS Theater

  • Digital Filmmaking

Students acquire 21st-century film and media production skills through the study of cinematic history and filmmaking techniques.  They will view and analyze films from different genres, explore techniques related to film production and editing, and work with digital video cameras and Final Cut Pro to produce their own short videos. All student works will be screened at the Middle School Film Festival in the spring.
  • Public Speaking MS

Whether you are giving a speech in front of your peers, making an in-class presentation, or contributing to a class discussion, being able to communicate effectively in a public setting is an important skill. In this class, students will explore what it means to be an effective communicator by focusing on not only the oral component of the craft, but also on content, organization, and audience. In addition to watching and analyzing iconic speakers and speeches and learning specific vocalization and movement techniques, students will practice a variety of different speaking styles, including informative and persuasive speech. This course will not only help students appreciate the craft of public speaking, but also develop practical skills that can be readily used in the classroom.
  • Theater 7

In 7th grade theater, the students explore the process of creating theater from both performance and technical viewpoints.  The class is divided into two teams – actors and designers.  As the actors memorize their lines and develop their characters, the designers are responsible for selecting and editing sound effects, designing the lighting, choosing costumes, and creating an appropriate setting using a projected image.  Halfway through the term, the teams are swapped to give each student a holistic experience.  This project-based, hands-on learning experience culminates with a final performance of various scenes.
  • Theater 8

In 8th grade theater, the students explore the process of creating theater from either a performance or technical perspective.  Building on the fundamental skills they learned in 7th grade theater, students perform scenes from classical texts.  While the designers actively utilize lighting, sound, costumes, and video projections to bring the world of the play to life, the actors strive to embody their characters and capture a specific time period.
