Eight Middle School students put their knowledge of maps, political boundaries, and bodies of water to the test Jan. 18 as they competed in the annual NCS Geography Bee. The four 7th graders and four 8th graders reached the bee through classroom qualifiers, and for the finals, they competed in front of their Middle School classmates and teachers.
Bilena Dabalen '21 was this year's champion, with Sarah Asher '21 (last year's winner) the runner-up. Bilena earned a spot in the March 31 District of Columbia Bee at the Charles Sumner School. The winner of the D.C. Bee qualifies for the National Championship in May.
Four million students in grades 4 through 8 compete annually in the National Geographic Bee. The national champion receives a $50,000 scholarship and a trip, while the rest of the 10 finalists also win awards.
A hearty well-done to each of the eight finalists, and congratulations, Bilena!
