NCS Students Excel on National Spanish Exam

Twenty-three NCS students won gold medals on this year's National Spanish Examinations, signifying their standing among the top 5 percent of Spanish students nationally, and four recorded the highest marks in the District of Columbia in their respective categories.

Sophie Searby '19, Josephine Freis '21, Maya Thumpasery '21, and Brianna Davis '22 were each D.C. chapter winners, while Sofia Hermoza '22 took second place in D.C. in her category.

The National Spanish Examinations, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, are administered to more than 150,000 U.S. students in grades 6 through 12. Students are categorized based on their level of instruction and their non-academic knowledge of Spanish, and medals are awarded to those whose scores place them in the top quarter of their category.

This year, 84 NCS students—nearly 20 percent of the Upper and Middle schools—earned medals: 23 gold (for students scoring at or above the 95th percentile), 35 silver (85th through 94th percentile), and 26 bronze (75th through 84th percentile).

Congratulations to each of these students and to their teachers: Nilda Villalta, Luis Deocares, Jennifer Kakuk and Tamara Riquelme-Manzoni.
